The theme quest for power is a theme that is pretty obvious throughout the story to the reader. You see elements of the theme in the overall conflict of the book with Queen Etheldredda's search for immortality. This can be seen when the author writes " Indeed, I shall have it, Marcellus. Do I not see it in its glass cabinet a-waiting for me? That is not yours mama!"- Page 432. This section
shows that Etheldredda doesn't care that Marcellus hasn't finished his potion of immortality she wants the power to be immortal badly enough she takes the risk. The next thing throughout the book you see that shows this theme is Queen Etheldredda plot to kill Jenna in order to secure power. This is described when the author talks about her plot by saying " And luck was still on her side because now she had the silver pistol to go with it- all she needed was the princess to point it at." - Page 321.
