The SicknesseThe sicknesse is an external conflict representing man vs. nature. The sicknesse is a sickness spreading through out the kingdom that posses almost magical like qualities and has infected most of the commoners. The sicknesse is believed to be caused by rat problems throughout the kingdom. This conflict creates a feeling of worry throughout the book as the sicknesse has affected so many people in the kingdom. This worry creates a desire for Septimus in the plot to find a cure for the sicknesse.

Marcellus PyeMarcellus Pye undergoes an internal conflict in story in his decision to help Queen Etheldredda achieve immortality. This decision makes you see Marcellus in a different light and throughout the story it leaves you wondering why he made the decision. This decision directly affects the plot as it becomes the reason for later plans by Queen Etheldredda to kill Jenna the princess once the potion of immortality fails.
